DJ Bunta
Ill Street Vinyl

Listening notes

DJ Bunta's Ill Street Vinyl was released in 2011 on Southpaw Chop (catalog number SPC-023). Catalogued under the Cut-up/DJ and Hip Hop genres, the release takes the form of a CD rather than the vinyl its title evokes — a detail that gives the project a self-aware quality, though what conclusions to draw from that choice is ultimately a matter for the listener.

The tracklist is extensive, running to 27 entries and suggesting a project with considerable ambition in terms of scope. Track durations are not documented in available data, so the overall runtime remains unconfirmed. The sequencing moves through titles that carry the cadence of classic hip hop vernacular: "Microphone Fiend," "Back To The Lab," "Dope On Plastic," and "Give The Drummer Some" sit alongside entries such as "Life Is Like A Nike Commercial" and "Tales From The Lite Side," the latter pair hinting at a range of tonal registers across the program.

Two tracks are identified explicitly as remixes — "Ain't No Half Steppin' (Remix)" at position five and "Court Is Now In Session (Remix)" at position nine — with the non-remix version of the latter, "Court's In Session," appearing immediately after at position ten. A track listed simply as "Skit" appears at position nineteen. "TDS Scratch Reaction" at position eight aligns with the release's cut-up genre classification, suggesting turntable technique features somewhere in the program.

Southpaw Chop's SPC-023 designation places Ill Street Vinyl as the twenty-third catalog entry from that label, though no further information about the label's broader output is available here for context.
