DJ Rectangle
Vinyl Kombat

Listening notes

DJ Rectangle's Vinyl Kombat was released in 2000 on Serious Records under catalog number RMCD004. Despite the label designation referencing a 12-inch format, the release exists here as a CD, a detail worth confirming with supplementary documentation before this entry is finalized.

The release carries a notably broad genre classification spanning conscious hip hop, cut-up and DJ work, gangsta, hip hop, and pop rap — a combination that suggests a mixtape or DJ compilation structure rather than a conventional studio album. That reading is supported by the tracklist itself, which runs to 31 tracks and includes multiple entries simply titled "Freestyle" at positions 2, 3, 17, and 23, as well as transitional pieces such as a 20-second "Scratch Interlude" at position 10 and two separate intro tracks. Several titles — including "California Love," "Woo Haa," "Boom Biddy Bye Bye (Remix)," and "Broken Language" — share names with well-known hip hop recordings from the 1990s, which is consistent with the cut-up and DJ genre tag, though the specific relationship of these tracks to those recordings is not confirmed by the data available here.

Total runtime, calculated from the tracklist, comes to approximately 62 minutes. Individual segments vary considerably in length, from the 20-second "Scratch Interlude" to the 3-minute 41-second "Shadow Boxin'" at position 28. The presence of remix designations on at least three tracks — "Real Live Shit (Remix)," "Envy (Remix)," and "Boom Biddy Bye Bye (Remix)" — is noted in the tracklist without further attribution.
