Jay Dee
Jay Deelicious: The Delicious Vinyl Years 95-98

Listening notes

Jay Deelicious: The Delicious Vinyl Years 95-98, released in 2007 on Delicious Vinyl under catalog number DV 9033, is a compilation collecting work produced by Jay Dee — also known as J Dilla — during his mid-to-late 1990s period working with the label. The title makes the scope of the collection explicit: material originating from a three-year window between 1995 and 1998.

The release is formatted as a triple LP, with six sides pressing across positions A through F. The first three sides — A, B, and C — carry the primary versions of the tracks, spanning hip-hop and jazzy hip-hop styles with both vocal and instrumental configurations represented. Side D through F then mirror a substantial portion of that programming in instrumental form, making the set function partly as a producer's reference for the underlying compositions. Among the tracks appearing in both forms are "Runnin'," "Sometimes (Remix)," "Somethin' That Means Somethin'," "She Said (Remix)," "Drop," "Saturday Night (Remix)," "Bullsh*t," "Y? (Remix)," and "Bullsh*ttin' (Remix)." Two tracks from the vocal sides — "Whatever You Want (Remix)" and "Splattitorium" — do not carry over to instrumental counterparts on this pressing.

The genres listed for the release — Hip Hop, Instrumental, and Jazzy Hip-Hop — reflect the range of material across the six sides, and the dual-format programming gives the set a structural logic that distinguishes it from a straightforward compilation.
