Public Enemy
Show Vinyl (Instrumentals)

Listening notes

Public Enemy's Show Vinyl (Instrumentals) is a 1987 vinyl release on Def Jam Recordings (2), carrying the catalog number DES J00Z. Cataloged under the genres of Conscious and Hip Hop, the record presents instrumental versions of tracks drawn from the group's catalog of that period.

The release is a single LP spread across two sides. Side A opens with "Miuzi Weighs A Ton," which at 5:44 is the longest track on the record, followed by "Timebomb" at 2:54 and "Raise The Roof" at 5:19. Side B carries four tracks: "Sophisticated Bitch" at 4:30, "Yo! Bum Rush The Show" at 4:25, "You're Gonna Get Yours" at 4:03, and "Rightstarter (Message To A Black Man)" at 3:49. The total runtime across all seven tracks places this as a reasonably substantial instrumental program.

As an instrumental release, the record strips away the vocal performances that otherwise define the source material, presenting the underlying production on its own terms. The instrumental format was a recognized practice within hip hop at the time, and its presence here under the Def Jam Recordings imprint situates it within that label's documented activity during the late 1980s.
