Academy 23
The Vinyl Documents

Listening notes

Academy 23's The Vinyl Documents was released in 1997 on Aon Productions under catalog number AON 007. Despite what the title might suggest, the release was issued on cassette rather than vinyl. The format spans two sides and carries genre tags of hardcore, pop rock, punk, and rock — a combination that hints at some breadth of approach across its twenty-six tracks.

Side A opens with "Gay And Proud" and runs through fourteen additional titles including "Subhuman Debris," "Winning The Struggle," "Double Standards," and a track titled "Scots Wha Hae" — a reference to the Robert Burns poem long associated with Scottish national identity. The side closes with "Hate," preceded by the compound track "Relationships / Death To Perspective" and the brief-titled "For Imogen Boorman."

Side B's eleven tracks include "Cramond Island," a reference to a tidal island in the Firth of Forth near Edinburgh, and "Ceartas Air Scaith Albannach," a title in Scottish Gaelic. Also present are "March Of The Cybermen," "Demoncrats," and "The Death Of A Bailife" — the last word of that title a likely variant spelling of bailiff. The side closes on "Common Ground."

The tracklist across both sides is notably long for a cassette release, and the range of titles — from the politically direct to the geographically specific to the personally dedicate — suggests varied thematic territory. No track durations are documented for this release.
