Black Funeral
Ankou And The Death Fire

Listening notes

Black Funeral's *Ankou and the Death Fire* was released in 2016 on Iron Bonehead Productions, catalogued as IBP296, and issued on vinyl. The record spans nine tracks distributed across two sides.

The album's tracklist draws its titles from figures and concepts rooted in Celtic and Breton mythology and folklore. The A-side opens with "Shadows of Obour" before moving to the title track, "Ankou and the Death Fire," and closes with "Dearg-Due (Blood Drinker)." The Ankou is a figure from Breton folklore associated with death, and the Dearg-Due is a blood-drinking entity from Irish tradition. The B-side extends this thematic territory considerably, with six tracks referencing additional mythological figures. "Gwyn Ap Nudd (King of the Underworld)" draws on Welsh mythology, while "Cwn Annwn (To Harvest Human Souls)" references the spectral hounds of the Welsh otherworld. "Oberour Ar Maro (Henchman of Death)" and "Labous An Ankou (Bird of Death)" return to Breton sources. "The Morrigan (Battle Crow)" references the Irish goddess associated with fate and war, and the record closes with "Dullahan Graven in Funeral Lights," the Dullahan being a headless horseman figure from Irish folklore.

The parenthetical translations accompanying several track titles make the thematic focus explicit, suggesting a deliberate and consistent conceptual framework built around death mythology from the Celtic world. Iron Bonehead Productions, the releasing label, is a German imprint with an established catalog in black and death metal. The release is catalogued under the genres black metal and rock.
