Le Dernier Crépuscule

Listening notes

Chthe'ilist's debut full-length, Le Dernier Crépuscule, was released in 2016 on Dark Descent Records (catalog number DDR148LP) in vinyl format. The album is catalogued under the genres of death metal and rock.

The record is spread across four sides, with the tracklist offering a sense of the album's structural ambitions through its running times alone. Side A opens with the title track, "Le Dernier Crépuscule," at 3:14, followed by "Into The Vaults Of Ingurgitating Obscurity," which runs to 7:37. Side B carries "Voidspawn" at 7:18 and "Scriptures Of The Typhlodians" at 6:29. Side C presents "The Voices From Beneath The Well" at 7:41 and "Vecoiitn'aphnaat'smaala" at 7:02. Side D is given over entirely to a single piece, "Tales Of The Majora Mythos Part 1," which extends to 13:27.

The track titles themselves point toward an elaborate conceptual framework, drawing on invented or esoteric terminology — Typhlodians, Majora Mythos — that suggests a sustained fictional or mythological system running through the material. The dedication of an entire vinyl side to a single composition exceeding thirteen minutes indicates that the album's structure was arranged with extended, uninterrupted listening in mind for at least a portion of the record.

The release was handled by Dark Descent Records, a label associated with underground death metal. The four-sided format accommodates a total runtime that would be difficult to fit across a standard two-sided pressing, and the side-by-side sequencing of shorter and longer pieces across Sides A through C gives way to the extended closing work on Side D.
