Den Stora Vilan
Den Stora Vilan

Listening notes

Den Stora Vilan's self-titled album was released in 2011 on Mourningwood Recordings, carrying the catalog number MWR005LP. The record spreads twelve tracks across two sides, cataloged under the genres of blues, pop, psychedelic rock, and rock.

The tracklist opens on the A-side with "Intermezzo," a brief piece running one minute and forty seconds, followed by the similarly short "Ishavet" at one minute and eighteen seconds. The side then stretches out with longer compositions: "Djuret" at five minutes and three seconds, "Voodoo" at two minutes and eleven seconds, "Ain't It Sad" at four minutes and seventeen seconds, "Bärares Blod" at five minutes and seven seconds, and "Ökenhotellet" closing the side at three minutes and fourteen seconds. The majority of the tracklist carries Swedish-language titles, with "Ain't It Sad" being a notable exception on the A-side.

The B-side opens with "Space" at five minutes and three seconds, followed by "Stukningens Refräng" at three minutes and twenty-four seconds, "Älven" at four minutes and fifty-one seconds, and "Insikten" at two minutes and thirty-three seconds. The record closes with "Vampyr Blues," running five minutes and two seconds. Several of the longer B-side tracks push past the four-minute mark, giving the second half of the record a weightier runtime overall.

The album was released as the fifth catalog entry from Mourningwood Recordings, as indicated by the MWR005LP designation. The blend of genre tags — spanning blues through to psychedelic rock — points to a release that draws from more than one tradition, though the specifics of how those influences are expressed across the record's thirty-three minutes and forty-three seconds of total runtime are for the listener to determine.
