Sinister Ceremonies

Listening notes

Domains released Sinister Ceremonies in 2014 through The Sinister Flame, a label whose catalog number TSF001 identifies this as its inaugural release. The record is catalogued under the genres of death metal and rock, and was issued on vinyl.

The album is structured across two sides with names that carry the same weight as the music they contain. Side Mastery opens with "Domains" at 5:49, followed by "Mastery" at 5:53, giving the first half of the record a deliberate, unhurried pace across its opening pair of tracks. "Through Infernal Damnation" at 3:35 and "Raped By Darkness" at 5:31 round out the side, bringing its total runtime to just over twenty minutes.

Side Scorn opens with "Hopeless," a fifty-second piece that stands apart from every other track on the record by a considerable margin. Whether it functions as an interlude or a statement in itself, its brevity is a structural choice that shapes how the remainder of the side is experienced. "Eucharist Of Relevance" follows at 3:29, then "Crowned At Dusk" at 5:37, the longest track on the B side. "Towards Pleroma" and "Labyrinth Of Incense" continue the sequence at 3:36 and 4:43 respectively, before the title track "Sinister Ceremonies" closes the record at 4:15.

The decision to name both the band's self-titled track and a separate piece after the album title — placing "Domains" at A1 and "Sinister Ceremonies" at B6 — gives the record a bookended quality, opening and closing with names that mirror the project's own identity. That the label's first catalog entry carries the number TSF001 makes Sinister Ceremonies a document of a label's beginning as much as a band's statement. Collectors and researchers working through The Sinister Flame's discography will find this release at the start of that thread.
