J. Geils Band, The
Nightmares ...And Other Tales From The Vinyl Jungle

Listening notes

Released in 1975 on Atlantic Records, *Nightmares ...And Other Tales From The Vinyl Jungle* by The J. Geils Band carries catalog number QD-18107. The album works across blues rock, pop rock, and rock, genres that had defined the band's output heading into the mid-1970s.

The record spreads nine tracks across two sides. Side A opens with "Detroit Breakdown," running six minutes, and moves through "Givin' It All Up" at three minutes and forty-three seconds before arriving at "Must Of Got Lost," which runs just over five minutes. "Look Me In The Eye" follows at three minutes and fifty-seven seconds, and the side closes with the title track "Nightmares," the shortest piece on the album at one minute and fourteen seconds — a notably brief entry given its position as the record's namesake.

Side B opens with the album's longest track, "Stoop Down #39," which runs six minutes and fifty seconds. It is followed by "I'll Be Coming Home" at four minutes and thirty seconds, then "Funky Judge" at three minutes and fifteen seconds. The side and the record close with "Gettin' Out," running five minutes and forty-six seconds.

Taken together, the nine tracks account for approximately forty minutes and thirty-nine seconds of material. The sequencing places the two longest individual tracks — "Detroit Breakdown" and "Stoop Down #39" — as the opening cuts of their respective sides, a structural choice worth noting for listeners approaching this pressing.
