J. Geils Band, The
Nightmares ...And Other Tales From The Vinyl Jungle

Listening notes

Released in 1974 on Atlantic Records (catalog number SD 18107), *Nightmares ...And Other Tales From The Vinyl Jungle* is the fifth studio album from The J. Geils Band, sitting within the blues rock and rock genres the band had built their reputation around.

The record spreads nine tracks across two sides. Side A opens with "Detroit Breakdown," running a substantial six minutes, before moving through "Givin' It All Up" and the five-minute "Must Of Got Lost." "Look Me In The Eye" follows at just under four minutes, and the side closes with the title track, "Nightmares," a notably brief interlude at one minute and fourteen seconds — the shortest piece on the album and, given its placement, something of a transitional moment between the two sides.

Side B gives the record its longest individual track in "Stoop Down #39," which extends to six minutes and fifty seconds. It is followed by "I'll Be Coming Home," "Funky Judge," and the closing "Gettin' Out," which rounds out the album at five minutes and forty-six seconds.

Taken together, the tracklist reflects a pattern common to the band's work in this period — a mix of extended, blues-leaning pieces alongside tighter, more compact numbers — though what conclusions to draw from that structure is a matter the listener can weigh for themselves. The album title's pointed nod to vinyl as a medium is worth noting as a period detail, arriving at a time when the LP format was the dominant mode of music distribution.

*Nightmares ...And Other Tales From The Vinyl Jungle* remains part of The J. Geils Band's documented catalog from their Atlantic years.
