Released in 1974 on Atlantic Records, *Nightmares ...And Other Tales From The Vinyl Jungle* is the fifth studio album from The J. Geils Band, issued under catalog number 50 073. The record sits within the band's established territory of blues rock, pop rock, and rock, genres the group had been working within since their formation in Boston.

The album's nine tracks are spread across two sides, with a total runtime that favors extended arrangements on several cuts. Side A opens with "Detroit Breakdown," the longest track on the album at six minutes, followed by "Givin' It All Up" and "Must Of Got Lost," the latter running just over five minutes. "Look Me In The Eye" closes out the midsection of the side before the title track, "Nightmares," arrives at a brief one minute and fourteen seconds — a notably compressed piece relative to its surroundings.
