J. Geils Band, The
Nightmares ...And Other Tales From The Vinyl Jungle

Listening notes

Released in 1974 on Atlantic Records, Nightmares ...And Other Tales From The Vinyl Jungle is the fifth studio album from The J. Geils Band, issued under catalog number K50073. The record spans nine tracks across two sides and works within the genres of blues rock, classic rock, and rock.

Side A opens with "Detroit Breakdown," the longest track on the first side at six minutes, followed by "Givin' It All Up" at three minutes and forty-three seconds. "Must Of Got Lost" runs just over five minutes, and "Look Me In The Eye" comes in at three minutes and fifty-seven seconds. The side closes with the title track, "Nightmares," the shortest entry on the record at one minute and fourteen seconds.

Side B leads with "Stoop Down #39," which at six minutes and fifty seconds is the longest individual track on the album. "I'll Be Coming Home" follows at four minutes and thirty seconds, with "Funky Judge" arriving next at three minutes and fifteen seconds. The album closes with "Gettin' Out," running five minutes and forty-six seconds.

The album title's explicit reference to vinyl in its subtitle — Nightmares ...And Other Tales From The Vinyl Jungle — gives the release a certain self-awareness about its medium, though what that framing was intended to convey remains a matter for listeners and researchers to consider. The nine-track sequence totals just under forty-one minutes of material, distributed fairly evenly across both sides, with each side anchored by at least one track exceeding five minutes.
