J. Geils Band, The
Nightmares ...And Other Tales From The Vinyl Jungle

Listening notes

The J. Geils Band's *Nightmares ...And Other Tales From The Vinyl Jungle*, released in 1974 on Atlantic Records (catalog number K 50073), is a vinyl LP sitting within the blues rock and rock genres. The album's title alone signals a certain self-awareness, folding the medium of its own release into its identity in a way that feels deliberate rather than incidental.

The record carries nine tracks spread across two sides. Side A opens with "Detroit Breakdown," the longest track on the album at six minutes even, and moves through "Givin' It All Up" and the five-minute "Must Of Got Lost" before closing out with "Look Me In The Eye" and the brief title track "Nightmares," which runs just one minute and fourteen seconds — a notably short statement by any measure, and an unusual choice for a side closer.

Side B opens with "Stoop Down #39," the album's longest track at six minutes and fifty seconds, before moving into "I'll Be Coming Home," "Funky Judge," and the closing "Gettin' Out," which runs five minutes and forty-six seconds. The sequencing on both sides tends to favor longer, more extended pieces at the bookends, with shorter tracks filling the interior — a structural pattern worth noting for collectors who pay attention to side dynamics.

In total, the nine tracks account for a substantial runtime, with several pieces exceeding five or six minutes, suggesting the band had room to stretch within individual songs rather than relying on sheer volume of tracks.
