J. Geils Band, The
Nightmares ...And Other Tales From The Vinyl Jungle

Listening notes

Released in 1974 on Atlantic Records, *Nightmares ...And Other Tales From The Vinyl Jungle* is a full-length vinyl album from The J. Geils Band cataloged under the number P-8510A. The record falls within the genres of blues rock, pop rock, and rock, placing it within a period when the band was an established presence on Atlantic's roster.

The album carries nine tracks spread across two sides. Side A opens with "Detroit Breakdown," the longest track on that side at six minutes, followed by "Givin' It All Up" at three minutes and forty-three seconds and "Must Of Got Lost" at five minutes and four seconds. "Look Me In The Eye" runs three minutes and fifty-seven seconds, and the side closes with the title track "Nightmares," a comparatively brief one minute and fourteen seconds — the shortest piece on the record.

Side B opens with "Stoop Down #39," the album's longest individual track at six minutes and fifty seconds. It is followed by "I'll Be Coming Home" at four minutes and thirty seconds, "Funky Judge" at three minutes and fifteen seconds, and the closing track "Gettin' Out," which runs five minutes and forty-six seconds.

In terms of total program time, Side B carries the heavier weight of longer material, with two tracks exceeding five minutes. The title's self-referential nod to the vinyl format itself — *Tales From The Vinyl Jungle* — is a notable element of the record's identity, embedded directly in what the band and label chose to put on the sleeve.
