The set is catalogued under the rock genre and presents the albums in chronological sequence: American Fool, Uh-Huh, Scarecrow, The Lonesome Jubilee, and Big Daddy.

Each disc replicates the original album program. American Fool occupies LP 1, its nine tracks spread across two sides, opening with "Hurts So Good" and "Jack & Diane" on Side A. LP 2 carries Uh-Huh across eight tracks plus a ninth, "Golden Gates," closing Side B. Scarecrow fills LP 3 with eleven tracks, beginning Side A with "Rain On The Scarecrow" and concluding Side B with "R.O.C.K. In The U.S.A." The Lonesome Jubilee appears on LP 4 across ten tracks, while Big Daddy closes the set on LP 5 with eleven tracks, the final entry being "J.M.'s Question."

The collection spans a period during which Mellencamp recorded under the name John Cougar Mellencamp, a detail the title reflects directly. The date range in the title, 1982-1989, corresponds to the original release years of the five albums contained within.
