Vinyl Confessions

Listening notes

Rock Candy's 2011 reissue of Kansas's Vinyl Confessions, catalogued as CANDY095, brings the band's 1982 studio album back into circulation on CD. The original release appeared during a period when the group, categorized across genres including Arena Rock, Art Rock, Prog Rock, and Rock, was operating in a changing musical landscape.

The ten-track program runs a total that reflects a range of song lengths across the set. The album opens with "Play The Game Tonight" at three minutes and twenty-eight seconds, the shortest track alongside "Chasing Shadows" at three minutes and twenty-two seconds, suggesting at least some of the material was oriented toward a more compact, radio-friendly structure relative to the extended compositions the band had pursued earlier in their catalog. "Cross Fire" closes the album at six minutes and thirty-five seconds, making it the longest piece on the record. The remaining eight tracks fall between four and just over five minutes, with "Fair Exchange" at five minutes and three seconds and "Diamonds And Pearls" at four minutes and fifty-two seconds occupying the middle of that range.

The tracklist proceeds through "Right Away," "Fair Exchange," "Chasing Shadows," "Diamonds And Pearls," "Face It," "Windows," "Borderline," and "Play On" before arriving at the closing track. Rock Candy issued this reissue under catalog number CANDY095 in 2011, placing it within the label's documented catalog of reissued rock titles from that era.
