Listening notes
Kawir's Εξιλασμος — transliterated as Exilasmos — appeared in 2017 through Iron Bonehead Productions, the German underground label that has built a substantial catalog of extreme metal releases. Issued under catalog number IBP348, the record is a vinyl release catalogued under the genres of black metal and rock.
The album's six tracks are divided evenly across two sides, and taken together they suggest a deliberate thematic architecture drawn from ancient Greek mythology and tragedy. The A-side opens with Λυκαων, referencing the Arcadian king Lykaon, whose story in classical sources involves a transgression against the gods and a punishment of transformation. It is followed by Οιδιπους, invoking the figure of Oedipus, and closes with Τανταλος, named for Tantalus, whose mythological crimes against the gods resulted in his eternal torment in the underworld. The B-side continues in a similar register: Θυεστια Δειπνα translates to the Thyestian Feast, a reference to the gruesome banquet at the center of the House of Atreus myth, followed by Αγαμεμνων and Ορεστης, which complete that mythological cycle through the figures of Agamemnon and Orestes respectively.
The sequencing across both sides traces a loose movement through Greek myth that centers on figures defined by catastrophic transgression, divine punishment, and inherited guilt — themes that have long intersected with black metal's broader interest in pre-Christian religious and cultural frameworks. Kawir, a Greek band, has operated within that space for a considerable period, and Exilasmos, as a title meaning expiation or atonement, frames the album's subject matter with some precision.
