Mayhem
De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas Alive

Listening notes

Mayhem's De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas Alive is a live vinyl release from the Norwegian black metal band, self-issued in 2017 under the catalog number MOR 001. Released through no external label, the record was distributed by Mayhem themselves, a detail reflected in its designation as Not On Label.

The release is a double album, spread across four sides. Side A opens with a combined track, Intro / Funeral Fog, followed by Freezing Moon. Side B carries Cursed In Eternity and Pagan Fears. The third side presents Life Eternal and From The Dark Past, while the final side closes with Buried By Time And Dust and the title track, De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. The sequencing mirrors the original studio album of the same name, running through all eight of its compositions in order.

That original studio album, released in 1994, has long occupied a significant place within black metal as a genre. This live record takes its tracklist wholesale from that record, presenting each song in a live setting across the double LP format. The title's addition of the word Alive is the clearest indication of that distinction.

The release is catalogued under both black metal and rock as genres, with black metal being the more precise descriptor for Mayhem's work. The self-released nature of the record, carrying only the band's own catalog designation rather than a commercial imprint, is a practical detail worth noting for collectors and researchers attempting to locate or verify pressings. No track durations are listed in available documentation.
