Neutral Milk Hotel
NMH Vinyl Box Set

Listening notes

Released in 2014 on NMH Records (catalog number NMH001), the NMH Vinyl Box Set collects material by Neutral Milk Hotel across five vinyl records, spanning genres cataloged as Folk Rock, Indie Rock, Psychedelic Rock, and Rock.

The set is organized around several distinct program titles. The first two records present In The Aeroplane Over The Sea across sides A and B, running through eleven tracks including "The King Of Carrot Flowers Pt. One," "Oh Comely" — which at 8:17 is the longest single track in the set — and "Two-Headed Boy Pt. Two." Sides C and D collect On Avery Island, a twelve-track program that includes "Gardenhead / Leave Me Alone," "Naomi," and "Pree-Sisters Swallowing A Donkey's Eye." Sides E and F present Ferris Wheel On Fire across eight tracks, among them "My Dream Girl Don't Exist" and "A Baby For Pree / Glow Into You." The fourth record devotes sides G and H to Everything Is, an eight-track sequence that closes with "Aunt Eggma Blow Torch" at an even five minutes.

The fifth record takes a different structural approach. Rather than a single continuous program, it groups material under individual release titles. Side I presents "Little Birds (Unfinished Version One)" at 6:02, the longest individual side in the set, followed by side J with "Little Birds (Unfinished Version Two)" at 4:36. Sides K and L are billed as Where You'll Find Me Now / You've Passed and offer alternate versions of two titles that also appear on the On Avery Island program, running 4:25 and 4:40 respectively — both longer than their earlier counterparts. Sides M and N, billed as Holland / Engine, close the set with versions of "Holland, 1945" and "Engine," titles that likewise appear elsewhere in the collection.

Across the full set, the tracklist documents fifty-two listed positions. Fact-checker should verify disc and side assignments, alternate version sourcing, and any additional release documentation not captured here.
