Nirvana
In Utero (The Vinyl Experience)

Listening notes

Released in 2013 on DGC Records under catalog number B0018958-01, "In Utero (The Vinyl Experience)" by Nirvana is cataloged as a file format release classified under Alternative Rock, Grunge, and Rock. Despite its title referencing vinyl, the release itself is documented as a digital file format.

The tracklist spans twenty entries, making it considerably more expansive than the original twelve-track album configuration. The core album sequence runs from "Serve The Servants" through "All Apologies," covering positions one through twelve, with track durations ranging from the brief "Tourette's" at one minute and thirty-five seconds to "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter" at five minutes even. "Heart-Shaped Box" clocks in at four minutes and fifty-six seconds, while "All Apologies" runs four minutes and ten seconds, the same duration as "Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle."

Beyond those twelve tracks, positions thirteen through seventeen add "Gallons Of Rubbing Alcohol Flow Through The Strip" at seven minutes and thirty-nine seconds, "Marigold," "Moist Vagina," "Sappy," and "I Hate Myself And Want To Die." The final three entries, positions eighteen through twenty, are of particular documentary interest: a Scott Litt mix of "Pennyroyal Tea" running three minutes and thirty-five seconds, and two tracks credited specifically to original mixes by Steve Albini — "Heart-Shaped Box" at four minutes and forty-one seconds, and "All Apologies" at four minutes and four seconds. The presence of these credited mix variants means this release provides direct tracklist-level documentation of both a Scott Litt mix and Steve Albini original mixes existing as discrete, timed entries.
