Traktor Scratch Control Vinyl Fluorescent Orange

Listening notes

Released in 2010 on Native Instruments' own label, the Traktor Scratch Control Vinyl in Fluorescent Orange (catalog number NI-20831) belongs to a category that sits well outside conventional record collecting: it is classified under the genres Non-Music and Technical, and its purpose is functional rather than musical.

The record's tracklist makes its design logic explicit. Both the A and B sides open with a Lead-In section before moving into a series of segments labeled Playback Zone, which occupy the majority of each side. Each side closes with two segments labeled Scroll Zone. The B side carries more Playback Zone segments than the A side — sixteen compared to ten — giving the two sides a noticeably different internal layout, though no track durations are listed for any segment.

No artist is credited, which is consistent with the record's technical classification. The grooves are not intended to deliver audio content to a listener but to communicate positional and directional data to compatible software. The fluorescent orange color distinguishes this pressing visually, though the data on file does not speak to what other color variants were produced or how this version relates to them.

For collectors and cataloguers, this release raises questions that standard record documentation was not built to answer. There is no composer, no performer, no runtime, and no conventional side structure to evaluate. What the data does confirm is that Native Instruments pressed a physical vinyl disc in 2010, assigned it a catalog number, and organized its grooves into a defined sequence of functional zones. That alone makes it a legitimate, if unusual, entry in any serious discography of the format.
