Traktor Scratch Control Vinyl MK2 Red

Listening notes

Released by Native Instruments in 2014, the Traktor Scratch Control Vinyl MK2 Red (catalog number NI-21809) is a timecode control record designed for use with DJ software rather than conventional music playback. Classified under the genres Non-Music and Technical, it sits in a category of vinyl that prioritizes function over recorded content in the traditional sense.

The record is pressed on red vinyl and carries the MK2 designation, indicating it is a second-generation release within the Traktor Scratch Control Vinyl line. Its two sides are labeled "Other Side" and "This Side," with listed durations of 12:00 and 17:00 respectively. The asymmetry between sides is notable in practical terms: the A side contains eleven untitled tracks, while the B side contains sixteen, though individual track durations are not specified in the release data. The total groove time across both sides amounts to 29 minutes as recorded.

As a timecode record, its content consists of encoded signal rather than music. The untitled track designations across positions A1 through A11 and B1 through B16 reflect the technical rather than artistic nature of what is pressed into the grooves. For cataloging purposes, crediting is listed as No Artist, consistent with standard practice for this category of release.

For collectors and catalogers working with DJ hardware-adjacent releases, this record presents an interesting documentation challenge. Its physical format — vinyl — places it within the same medium as conventional music releases, yet its purpose and content differ fundamentally. The 2014 release date and MK2 designation are the primary anchors for situating this item within Native Instruments' product timeline.
