Rainbow
Finyl Vinyl

Listening notes

Released by Polydor in 1986 under catalog number 827 987-4, Finyl Vinyl is a cassette compilation from Rainbow, the hard rock and classic rock band. The release brings together fifteen tracks drawn from across the group's catalog, spanning a combined runtime that reflects considerable range in song length, from the comparatively brief "Jealous Lover" at three minutes and ten seconds to the extended "Difficult to Cure," which runs eleven minutes and fifteen seconds on the B side.

The A side opens with "Spotlight Kid" and moves through a sequence of nine tracks, including "I Surrender," "Miss Mistreated," "Street of Dreams," "Can't Happen Here," and "Since You Been Gone," before closing with "Bad Girl." The extended live or alternate version of "Tearin' Out My Heart," clocking in at eight minutes and four seconds, occupies position A7 and represents one of the longer inclusions on that side.

The B side carries six tracks and leans toward longer material overall. "Man on the Silver Mountain" runs eight minutes and twenty seconds, while "Long Live Rock 'n' Roll" follows at seven minutes and twelve seconds. The side concludes with "Weiss Heim" at five minutes and ten seconds. "Stone Cold" and "Power" also appear on the B side, alongside the aforementioned "Difficult to Cure."

The cassette format places the release within a specific moment in the mid-1980s music market, when tape remained a primary commercial format alongside vinyl and the emerging compact disc. As a compilation, Finyl Vinyl collects material associated with the classic rock and hard rock genres the band worked within throughout their active years.
