Finyl Vinyl

Listening notes

Released in 1986 on Polydor (catalog number 827 987-2), Finyl Vinyl is a compilation from Rainbow presented here in CD format. The title's punning nod to vinyl records is notable given that the release arrived as the compact disc was establishing itself as a dominant commercial format.

The thirteen-track collection spans a total runtime that reflects considerable breadth, with selections ranging from the relatively compact "Jealous Lover" at three minutes and ten seconds to an extended "Difficult To Cure" at eleven minutes and fifteen seconds. "Man On The Silver Mountain," clocking in at eight minutes and sixteen seconds, and "Long Live Rock 'N' Roll" at seven minutes and eight seconds similarly suggest that live or extended versions may feature here, though the verified facts do not confirm the nature of these recordings.

The tracklist draws from across what the sequencing implies is a career-spanning selection. Titles such as "Since You Been Gone," "I Surrender," "Stone Cold," and "Can't Happen Here" appear alongside the aforementioned longer pieces, assembling thirteen tracks across the hard rock and rock genres the band is catalogued under.

The closing track, "Weiss Heim," runs five minutes and fifteen seconds. The title stands apart from the rest of the tracklist in character, though the verified facts do not describe its content or origins.
