Rainbow
Finyl Vinyl

Listening notes

Rainbow's *Finyl Vinyl*, released on Polydor in 1986 under catalog number 38MM 0490/1, is a double-album compilation spread across four sides of vinyl. Falling under the hard rock and rock genres, the set brings together fourteen tracks drawn from across the band's catalog, with a total running time that gives the collection considerable weight.

The tracklist opens on Side A with "Spotlight Kid" at five minutes, followed by "I Surrender" at five minutes and forty-five seconds, and "Miss Mistreated" rounding out the side at three minutes and twenty-one seconds. Side B carries five tracks: "Jealous Lover," "Can't Happen Here," "Tearin' Out My Heart," "Since You Been Gone," and "Bad Girl," with "Tearin' Out My Heart" running to just over eight minutes, making it the longest entry on that side.

Side C leads with "Difficult To Cure," the collection's single longest track at eleven minutes and fifteen seconds, followed by "Stone Cold" and "Power." Side D closes the record with "Man On The Silver Mountain" at eight minutes and twenty seconds, "Long Live Rock 'n' Roll" at seven minutes and twelve seconds, and "Weiss Heim" at five minutes and ten seconds. The extended durations on Sides C and D give the final half of the album a notably different pacing compared to the tighter cuts that open the set.

As a four-sided vinyl release, the catalog number 38MM 0490/1 reflects the double-album format. The 1986 release date places it in the year following Rainbow's dissolution, a point of context that the title itself, a phonetic play on "final vinyl," appears to acknowledge directly.
