Finyl Vinyl

Listening notes

Released by Polydor in 1999 under catalog number 547 368-2, Finyl Vinyl is a two-disc CD compilation from Rainbow, the hard rock band founded by guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. The set brings together fifteen tracks drawn from across the group's catalog, spanning a range of material that reflects different periods and lineups of the band.

The tracklist is spread across two discs. The first disc opens with "Spotlight Kid" at just over six minutes and moves through a sequence that includes "I Surrender," "Miss Mistreated," "Street of Dreams," and "Jealous Lover" before closing with "Bad Girl." Notable among the first disc's entries is "Tearin' Out My Heart," the longest selection on that side at eight minutes and five seconds, and "Since You Been Gone," one of the more concise entries at three minutes and forty-five seconds.

The second disc leans toward extended running times. It opens with "Difficult to Cure" at eleven minutes and thirteen seconds, the longest track on the entire release, and also includes "Man on the Silver Mountain" at eight minutes and eighteen seconds and "Long Live Rock 'n' Roll" at seven minutes and seven seconds. "Stone Cold," "Power," and "Weiss Heim" round out the second disc, bringing the collection to a close.

In total, the release contains sixteen tracks across two discs. The genres listed for the release are Hard Rock and Rock. As a 1999 Polydor issue, Finyl Vinyl represents one avenue through which listeners encountering Rainbow's recorded output have been able to access a cross-section of the band's work in a single compiled package.
