Listening notes
Released in 2017 on UMC (catalog number 5713600), The Vinyl Collection 1981-1996 is a ten-disc box set gathering Status Quo's studio output across a fifteen-year stretch of their career. The set spans the classic rock, hard rock, and rock genres, and its scope alone makes it a substantial physical artifact for anyone cataloguing the band's work on vinyl.
The albums represented across the box's twenty sides run from Never Too Late and 1+9+8+2 through Back To Back, In The Army Now, Ain't Complaining, Perfect Remedy, Rock Till You Drop, Thirsty Work, and the covers album Don't Stop. That final entry accounts for a significant portion of the later sides, with its tracklist drawing on titles associated with other artists including "Fun, Fun, Fun," "When You Walk In The Room," "Get Back," "Proud Mary," and "Lucille," among others.
Beyond the studio albums, the set also includes a disc credited as The Other Side Of Status Quo alongside an additional record carrying extended and alternate versions, among them "Running All Over The World," an extended version of "Burning Bridges (On And Off And On Again)," an extended take on "Ain't Complaining," and "The Wanderer (Sharon The Nag Mix)." A Milton Keynes Medley and The Quo Cake Mix also appear in the sequence, adding material that sits outside the straightforward album programme.
Across its sides, the collection moves through positions A to X, making it one of the more expansive single-artist vinyl box sets issued during the mid-2010s vinyl reissue period. The set is an unambiguous attempt to consolidate a dense and commercially active chapter of the band's discography into one physical package.
