Blood, Sweat + Vinyl: DIY In The 21st Century

Listening notes

Released in 2011 on The Scourge Productions, Blood, Sweat + Vinyl: DIY In The 21st Century is a box set combining a DVD documentary film with an extras disc, catalogued under the rock genre. The release carries no assigned catalog number.

The main film is structured as a sequence of artist and label segments, covering Hydra Head Records and several acts associated with it, including Jesu, Cave In, and Isis. The documentary also gives dedicated segments to Neurot Recordings and its associated act Neurosis, alongside A Storm Of Light, Oxbow, Made Out Of Babies, and Grails. A second cluster of segments addresses the Montreal-based Constellation Records label, with individual sections devoted to Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra, Evangelista, and Do Make Say Think. The film closes with segments titled "Post-Rock/Terminology Is Lame," "Redefining Independent," and end credits, suggesting the documentary frames its subjects within broader questions about genre language and the meaning of independence in the music industry.

The extras disc collects fifteen titles, among them tracks attributed by title to several of the artists featured in the documentary, including pieces titled "Gentle Time," "Ontario Plates," "Wounded Rhino," "Distill (Watching The Swarm)," and "Live Improvised Collaboration," among others. No durations or personnel credits are available in the verified data for any of the disc's contents.

As a document of early twenty-first century independent music operations, the release brings together two labels and more than a dozen artists under a single physical package. Duration information for individual segments and tracks is not available in the source data.
