Cooking Vinyl Delicatessen 5

Listening notes

Cooking Vinyl Delicatessen 5 is a compilation released by Cooking Vinyl in 2003 under catalog number GRILLCD 021P. The CD format release is the fifth installment in the label's Delicatessen series and draws from a range of genres including folk, folk rock, indie rock, and rock, reflecting the broad stylistic territory Cooking Vinyl occupied at the time.

The disc collects eighteen tracks with a combined running time of roughly seventy-seven minutes. Track lengths vary considerably, from the compact two minutes and nineteen seconds of "Somewhere Nicer" at position five to the five minutes and forty seconds of "A Damn Good Disguise" at position nine, suggesting a varied editorial approach to sequencing. Several tracks appear here in radio edit form, including "Alaska," "See The Stars," and "Irresistable Romance," indicating that alternate versions of those recordings existed at the time of release.

The tracklist touches on a wide tonal range suggested by title alone. "Talkin' Al Kida Blues" at position twelve carries a title that places it squarely in a post-2001 cultural moment, while "Take The Skinheads Bowling" at position ten shares its name with a well-known Camper Van Beethoven song, though no attribution data is available in the verified record to confirm the performing artist here.

As the fifth entry in the Delicatessen series, this release continued Cooking Vinyl's practice of using compilation formats to present roster and affiliated artists in a single collection. No additional personnel, liner note, or production information is available in the verified record for this entry.
