MM Vinyl Conflict 1

Listening notes

Released in 1986 on the Melody Maker label, MM Vinyl Conflict 1 (catalog number CONFLICT 1) is a four-track vinyl compilation spanning indie rock, pop, pop rock, and rock. The release brings together two tracks per side, with "Oily Black Limousine" opening the A-side at four minutes and seventeen seconds, followed by "Skin And Dust" at three minutes and twelve seconds. The B-side leads with "The Bells" at two minutes and eighteen seconds, closing with "Anxious" at two minutes and seventeen seconds.

The connection to Melody Maker, one of the United Kingdom's long-running weekly music publications, situates this release within a broader tradition of magazines venturing into physical product during the 1980s. Whether as a promotional supplement, a standalone release, or part of a series suggested by the numbered catalog suffix, the record represents a documented intersection of print music journalism and vinyl distribution during that decade.

The tracklist itself reflects a modest but varied runtime, with the A-side running just over seven and a half minutes in total and the B-side clocking in at under five minutes combined. The genre categorizations — indie rock, pop, pop rock, and rock — suggest a broad curatorial approach rather than a narrowly focused aesthetic brief, which was consistent with how music weeklies of the era often engaged with contemporary acts across emerging and established sounds.

Beyond these documented details, the specifics of contributing artists, recording circumstances, and the release's broader context within Melody Maker's publishing output remain outside what can be confirmed here. Collectors and researchers seeking to build on this record may find the Melody Maker archives a productive avenue for further investigation.
