Punk Elää Vol. 1 - Onko Suomi Vapaa Maa? (Finnish Private Press Punk 1979-1980)

Listening notes

Svart Records released Punk Elää Vol. 1 - Onko Suomi Vapaa Maa? (Finnish Private Press Punk 1979-1980) in 2019 under catalog number SRE372. The release is a vinyl box set collecting material from the Finnish punk scene of the late 1970s and early 1980s, with the subtitle indicating the source recordings date from 1979 to 1980.

The box set spans multiple records, with sides designated A through F. The tracklist includes seven titles: "Onko Suomi Usattunut?" on side A, "Ei Oo Paras Päivä Tänään" on side B, "Onko Suomi Vapaa Maa?" and "Mä Meen!" sharing side C, "Älä Ota Kesäkissaa" on side D, "Rock Against Seija Isonsaari" on side E, and "Suutarin Emännän Kehtolaulu" on side F. The title track, "Onko Suomi Vapaa Maa?," translates roughly to "Is Finland a Free Country?," a phrase that also forms part of the release's full title. Several of the track titles suggest Finnish-language content throughout.

The release is catalogued under the genres of punk and rock, and is credited to various artists, consistent with its presentation as a compilation. The private press designation in the subtitle indicates the original recordings were self-released or issued through small independent means during the period covered.

Svart Records is a Finnish label, and this release falls within an area of focus the label has maintained in documenting domestic underground and archival music. The box set format and the 2019 release year place it as a retrospective reissue project. No additional verified details regarding personnel, original pressing information, or other release specifications are available in the source data for this entry.
