Vinyl Dogs Vol. 1

Listening notes

Released in 1993 on Vinyl Dogs Records, catalog number BL-001, Vinyl Dogs Vol. 1 is a various-artists compilation issued on vinyl. The release brings together eight tracks spread across two sides, drawing from a range of genres that includes Afrobeat, funk, jazz, jazz-funk, reggae, and funk/soul.

Side A opens with "Sweet Love" and continues through "Dirty Feet," "Talkin' Talkin'," and "Hot Wind." Side B carries "Too Late To Turn Back," "Down Home Girl," "Soul Songs," and "Something In." Track durations are not documented in available records.

The breadth of genres listed for a single compilation — spanning African rhythmic traditions associated with Afrobeat, the groove-centered vocabulary of funk and jazz-funk, the Caribbean rhythms of reggae, and the broader soul-inflected territory of jazz — suggests an intent to assemble varied stylistic material under one release. Whether that variety represents a curatorial statement or simply reflects the roster of artists available to the label at the time is not something the available facts can answer.

Vinyl Dogs Records carries the designation "(2)" in reference databases, indicating the label name is shared with at least one other distinct entity and should not be confused with other imprints of the same name.

As a Vol. 1 release, the catalog number BL-001 and the series title imply at least the intention of subsequent volumes, though no information about follow-up releases is included here.

Personnel, recording origins, pressing details, and individual artist credits are not documented in the available source material and have been omitted from this draft pending further verification.
