Listening notes

Released in 2022 on UMC (catalog number 5396136), Vinyl > Modern > Pop is a various artists compilation spread across four sides of vinyl. The release draws from the genres of hip hop, pop, and rock, assembling thirty-two tracks from a range of contemporary artists onto a double LP format.

The tracklist opens on Side A with Olivia Rodrigo's "Drivers License," running four minutes and two seconds, followed by The Weeknd's "Save Your Tears," Lil Nas X's "Montero (Call Me By Your Name)," Doja Cat's "Kiss Me More," Lizzo's "Good As Hell," and several further selections including Tate McRae's "You Broke Me First" and JP Saxe and Julia Michaels' "If The World Was Ending." Side B moves through Glass Animals' "Heatwaves," Mark Ronson and Miley Cyrus's "Nothing Breaks Like A Heart," Coldplay and BTS's "My Universe," Måneskin's "I Wanna Be Your Slave," Sam Fender's "Seventeen Going Under," and Tom Grennan's "Little Bit Of Love," among others. Side C includes Dua Lipa's "Levitating," Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande's "Rain On Me," and a further run of tracks closing out with Anne-Marie and Niall Horan's "Our Song." Side D concludes the compilation with Billie Eilish's "Bad Guy," Justin Bieber's "Peaches," and Lana Del Rey's "Blue Banisters," which at four minutes and fifty-three seconds is the longest track on the release, before closing on Kacey Musgraves's "Star-Crossed."

The compilation's scope — spanning hip hop, pop, and rock across thirty-two selections — reflects a broad curatorial approach to early 2020s mainstream output. As a vinyl document of that moment, it offers a single physical object collecting tracks that were otherwise distributed across individual releases and streaming platforms. Whether the format suits every title on the roster is a question this draft does not attempt to answer, and the full artist and songwriter credits should be verified before publication.
