Vinyl: Music From The HBO Original Series Volume 1

Listening notes

Released in 2016 on Atlantic Records (catalog number 553328-1), Vinyl: Music From The HBO Original Series Volume 1 is a compilation tied to the HBO television series of the same name. The set was issued in both vinyl and CD formats, with the vinyl edition spread across four sides and the CD replicating the same eighteen-track sequence on a single disc.

The tracklist draws from blues, funk, soul, pop, and rock, reflecting the breadth of genres the series engaged with. The vinyl edition sequences the program across sides A through D, opening with "The World Is Yours" and closing on side D with "I Just Want To Make Love To You." Titles in between include "Personality Crisis," "Suspicious Minds," "Mr. Pitiful," "Slippin' Into Darkness," "Frankenstein," "It's Just Begun," and "Stranded In The Jungle," among others. "Sugar Daddy (Theme From Vinyl)" is identified explicitly as the series theme.

The compilation carries the subtitle Volume 1, indicating at minimum an intention at the time of release to issue further volumes, though the verified data here covers only this first installment. The four-sided vinyl configuration accommodates eighteen tracks across the double-LP format, with sides A and B carrying five tracks each and sides C and D carrying four tracks each.

The CD edition mirrors the vinyl tracklist exactly, offering the same eighteen selections in the same order without additional or alternate material, based on the available data. Both formats were released under the Atlantic imprint, a label with a documented history in the soul and rock genres represented throughout this compilation.
