Vinyl Post: Volume 5

Listening notes

Vinyl Post: Volume 5 arrived in 2019 as the fifth installment in the label's ongoing compilation series, released under catalog number VPLP-005. Spanning nine tracks across two sides, the record brings together works filed under dream pop, indie rock, lo-fi, and rock, suggesting a curatorial approach that values mood and texture alongside genre range.

Side A carries five tracks and opens with "All The Boys I Know" at three minutes and twenty-four seconds, followed by "The Only One" at three minutes and one second. The side's longest entry, "It'll Be OK," runs four minutes and fifty-two seconds before giving way to "Held To Light" at three minutes and fifteen seconds and "Communication" at three minutes and twenty-six seconds. The combined running time of Side A places it on the longer end for a five-track side.

Side B opens with "Game of Illusion," the compilation's lengthiest track at five minutes and nineteen seconds, and moves into "Some People," the shortest cut on the record at two minutes and forty-eight seconds. "Beauty Sleep" follows at four minutes and forty-six seconds, and the side closes with "She's So Political" at three minutes and fifty seconds. The sequencing on Side B moves from the compilation's longest track to its shortest before expanding again, a structural choice that gives the second side a distinct internal rhythm.

Across both sides, the tracklist reflects a range of individual track lengths, from under three minutes to just over five, which keeps the compilation from settling into a uniform pace. As the fifth volume in the Vinyl Post series, VPLP-005 extends a format the label had been building since at least its earliest numbered entries.
