Vinyl Retentive

Listening notes

Released in 1993 on Very Small Records, Vinyl Retentive (catalog number VSR 20) is a various-artists compilation issued on vinyl. Spanning four sides across what the track layout indicates is a double LP, the release collects thirty tracks drawn from the hardcore, pop punk, punk, and rock genres.

The compilation's scope is considerable. Side A opens with "Yummy Yummy Yummy" and moves through nine tracks in just over twenty-three minutes, with individual pieces ranging from the brief "Michael Got A Unicycle" at one minute and nineteen seconds to the more extended "Will You Go Out With My Mom?" at three minutes and thirty-nine seconds. Side B carries six tracks, closing with "Catch Phrase," the longest entry on that side at five minutes and eighteen seconds. Side C presents eight tracks and includes some of the shorter, more compressed entries on the record, among them "System Fucker" at one minute and forty-four seconds and "Possessed" at one minute and thirty-three seconds. Side D rounds out the release with ten tracks, the briefest being "The Big Hurry" at one minute and seven seconds.

Taken together, the thirty tracks run to approximately eighty-three minutes of total playing time, a substantial program for a vinyl release. The title Vinyl Retentive, paired with the label name Very Small Records, suggests a self-aware sensibility on the part of whoever assembled the project. Beyond the tracklist, timing data, catalog information, and genre designations, the verified record on this release is limited, and contributing artists are not confirmed in the available documentation. Researchers and collectors seeking personnel details, pressing information, or notes on individual contributors should consult primary documentation before drawing further conclusions.
