Viva La Vinyl

Listening notes

Viva La Vinyl is a various artists compilation released in 1994 on Dead Beat Records (catalog number DB 03). Issued on vinyl, the record brings together sixteen tracks spanning hardcore, pop punk, punk, and rock, spread across two sides.

The A-side opens with "Shingle" and moves through "Destroying The Builder," "These Are The Quotes From Our Favorite 80's Movies," "Streak (Bill #1)," "Magical Mystery Tour," "Bomb," and "Can't Listen," accounting for seven tracks in total. The B-side carries nine tracks: "Happy All The Time," "I Wish," "Crawl," "Flower," "Crazy Al," "So What," "Bear Named Dog," "My Crime," and "Weight Of The Sun."

As a snapshot of the mid-1990s underground punk and hardcore landscape, compilations of this type served a practical function — gathering acts under a single label umbrella and circulating them through independent distribution networks at a time when that infrastructure was central to how smaller scenes sustained themselves. Dead Beat Records, operating as the second entity to carry that name, used DB 03 as its catalog designation for this release, placing it early in the label's documented output.

Track durations are not confirmed in available documentation, and personnel details, pressing specifications, and contributing artist identities for individual tracks are not verified here and should be confirmed before publication. The title Viva La Vinyl, functioning as a straightforward declaration of the format itself, reflects a self-aware streak common in punk-adjacent releases of the era, though the extent to which that framing was intentional commentary remains a matter of interpretation.
