Viva La Vinyl Volume #3

Listening notes

Viva La Vinyl Volume #3 is a various artists compilation released by Dead Beat Records in 1999, carrying the catalog number DB 22. It is the third entry in the label's Viva La Vinyl series and arrives on vinyl format, grouped under the genres of garage rock, punk, and rock.

The record spreads fifteen tracks across two sides. The A-side opens with "Overdose Of Nothing" and moves through "I Just Wanna Fuck," "Stray Cat Blues," "Born, Work, Die," "Rock N Roll Hum," "No Time," "Don't Gamble With Love," and "You're A Sick Rat." The B-side carries "Another Night," "Switchblade New Wave," "I Hate Rock N Roll," "Burning Instinct," "180," "I Gotta Go," and closes with "The Easy Way Out." Track durations are not documented in the available information.

The title sequence alone communicates something about the tonal range the compilers were working within. Titles such as "Born, Work, Die," "Switchblade New Wave," and "I Hate Rock N Roll" sit alongside "Don't Gamble With Love," suggesting a program that moves between confrontational brevity and something slightly more traditional in its concerns, at least by the conventions of the genres represented. Whether that range is deliberate sequencing or incidental is not something the available facts can confirm.

Dead Beat Records, identified here as the second entity operating under that name, issued the release at the close of the 1990s, a period when vinyl compilation formats remained a practical vehicle for labels working in underground garage and punk circles. No additional personnel, pressing details, or related release information is confirmed in the available data.
