Listening notes

Svart Records released this five-LP box set from Finnish act Xysma in 2019 under catalog number SRE357. Titled Repulsive Morbidity – A Boxful of Foetal Mush 1988–1991, the set spans ten sides of vinyl across five records and draws material from a period the packaging itself delineates through its section headings: demos, a mini-LP and EP, rehearsal tapes, and live recordings.

The tracklist is organized into distinct source categories. The demo section opens with recordings attributed to Repulse, listed as a pre-Xysma project, with the earliest material dated to a 1988 car trip in Sweden. A 1989 demo labeled Torvi-Demo and a second 1989 demo titled Swarming of the Maggots follow on the same disc. Individual tracks across these sections are brief, with many running under ninety seconds, consistent with the goregrind and grindcore genres listed for the release alongside death metal and rock.

The mini-LP and EP section covers two separately titled releases from 1990, Above the Mind of Morbidity and Fata Morgana, followed by the 1991 EP Yeah, which occupies sides E and F. The Yeah material notably includes titles that differ in character from the earlier goregrind content, and the genres listed for the overall set include rock, which may reflect this period of the band's output.

Rehearsal tapes from May 1989 and October 1990 occupy sides G and H respectively. The 1990 rehearsal is subtitled Pre-Yeah, indicating its relationship to that EP. Live sides document a show at Jyrkkälä Youth House in Turku on March 26, 1989, and a second Turku performance at A-Panimo on February 2, 1991. Several tracks on the live side I are listed with the placeholder title "?", suggesting the original recording did not allow for confident identification at the time of compilation.
