Black Vinyl Undercover

Listening notes

Black Vinyl Undercover is a 1987 vinyl release by Belgian act à;GRUMH..., issued on Play It Again Sam Records under catalog number BIAS 72. The record sits within the EBM, electro, and electronic genres, placing it among the output of a label that was active in those areas during the mid-to-late 1980s.

The album spreads ten tracks across two sides. The A side opens with "Bach Catalogue" at two minutes and forty-two seconds, followed by the considerably longer "Hammam" at five minutes and forty seconds. "Generation" and "R.L.P.K." occupy the third and fourth positions at three minutes and six seconds and three minutes and twenty seconds respectively, with "The Bumf (We Know What Life Is)" closing the side at three minutes and fifty-eight seconds. The B side begins with "Countrol" at four minutes and eleven seconds, then offers one of the more notable structural details of the record: "Yesterday," listed at just sixteen seconds, making it a brief interruption before "The Drive" runs for five minutes and fifty-six seconds. "M.D.A." follows at four minutes and fifty-eight seconds, and "An Island Called..." closes the record at four minutes and thirty-nine seconds.

The title Black Vinyl Undercover carries an evident self-referential quality for a record released on vinyl, though what that framing was intended to communicate remains a matter for the listener to consider rather than something the available documentation settles. Play It Again Sam, a Brussels-based independent label, was a consistent presence in European EBM and electronic music during this period, and BIAS 72 places this release within that broader catalog sequence.
