Art Of Noise, The
Below The Waste

Listening notes

Below The Waste, released by The Art of Noise in 1989 on China Records, is catalogued under the number 839 404-1. The album appeared on vinyl and sits across genres listed as Electronic, Leftfield, and Synth-pop.

The record carries twelve tracks spread across two sides. Side A opens with "Yebo!" at six minutes and two seconds, the longest individual piece on the album, followed by "Catwalk" at five minutes and thirty seconds and "Island" at five minutes and fifty seconds. Between those two longer pieces sits "Promenade 1," a brief interlude of thirty-eight seconds, and "Dilemma" at three minutes and four seconds. Side B mirrors something of that structural approach. "Dan Dare" leads at five minutes and fifty seconds, matched in duration by "Island" on the flip. "Chain Gang" runs three minutes and six seconds, followed by the second brief connector, "Promenade 2," at forty seconds. The side then works through "Back To Back" at three minutes and fifty seconds, "Flashback" at one minute and fifty seconds, "Spit" at three minutes and thirty seconds, and closes with "Finale" at two minutes and forty seconds.

The two "Promenade" pieces, each under a minute, appear to function as structural pivots within each side, separating the longer material from what follows. The combined running time across all twelve tracks places this as a reasonably substantial single-LP programme.

For collectors and researchers, the China Records pressing under catalog number 839 404-1 represents the primary vinyl document of this title as released in 1989. Verification of matrix details, country of manufacture, and any variant pressings would require inspection of physical copies and is not addressed here.
