Pick Of The Pieces: The Vinyl Collection.

Listening notes

Demon Records released Pick Of The Pieces: The Vinyl Collection by Average White Band in 2018 as a vinyl box set. Catalogued under the number 5014797896673 and filed under the funk and funk/soul genres, the set brings together five albums across ten sides of vinyl, spanning recordings the band made between 1974 and 1980.

The box opens with the 1974 album AWB, spread across sides A and B, and comprising ten tracks including "You Got It," "Got The Love," and the well-known "Pick Up The Pieces." The 1975 album Cut The Cake follows on sides C and D, with ten tracks of its own, among them the title track, "School Boy Crush," and "If I Ever Lose This Heaven." Soul Searching, from 1976, occupies sides E and F and runs to eleven tracks, including "A Love Of Your Own," "Queen Of My Soul," and the closing "Digging Deeper." The 1979 album Feel No Fret fills sides G and H across nine tracks, with titles such as "Walk On By," "Atlantic Avenue," and "Fire Burning." The set concludes with Shine from 1980, spread across sides I and J, again at ten tracks, and closing with "Into The Night (Reprise)."

In total the collection accounts for fifty tracks drawn from five studio albums. The sequencing follows the original album structures rather than presenting a compilation arrangement, which means each record is reproduced as a discrete unit within the broader set. Collectors and listeners seeking the band's output from this period of their catalog will find it gathered here in a single package.
