Listening notes
Released in 2017 on A&M Records (catalog number B0026333-01), The Vinyl Collection is a box set gathering the Carpenters' studio albums in the pop genre onto vinyl. The set spans sides A through X, using that full run of alphanumeric side designations to accommodate its scope.
The albums represented, each marked as a discrete section within the tracklist, are Ticket To Ride, Close To You, Carpenters, A Song For You, Now And Then, Horizon, A Kind Of Hush, Passage, Made In America, Voice Of The Heart, and Lovelines. A further disc presents The Singles 1969–1973, occupying sides W and X.
The total track count is substantial. Sides A and B carry the Ticket To Ride album, which opens with the brief "Invocation" (1:03) and closes with "Benediction" (0:41), framing the longer album tracks between them. Now And Then, spread across sides I and J, includes the extended oldies medley sequence on side J, broken into individually listed segments running from "Fun, Fun, Fun" through "One Fine Day." Passage, on sides O and P, contains the set's longest single track, the medley "On The Balcony Of The Casa Rosada / Don't Cry For Me Argentina" at 8:13, followed closely by "Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft" at 7:06. Lovelines, the final studio album in the sequence, fills sides U and V with twelve tracks.
The Singles 1969–1973 closes the box on sides W and X, presenting twelve tracks that duplicate titles already appearing on the studio album sides, in versions whose individual durations differ slightly from their album counterparts in several cases.
