Chippie (4) / Blame & Seba
Big Grey Wolf / Liquid Electricity

Listening notes

Released in 2021 on Violet Nights Recordings, this twelve-inch single presents two tracks operating within the drum and bass and broader electronic genres. Catalogued as VNR003, it marks the label's third release under its numbering system, pairing Chippie with Blame and Seba across its two sides.

The A-side carries "Big Grey Wolf," a track credited to Chippie that runs to seven minutes and twenty-four seconds. The B-side, "Liquid Electricity," is credited to Blame and Seba and clocks in at six minutes and four seconds. Together the two tracks account for just over thirteen and a half minutes of material across the record's two sides.

The pairing of artists across a single release is a format with a long history in drum and bass, where label showcases and split releases have frequently served to introduce or consolidate an artist's association with a particular imprint. Whether that context applies meaningfully here is a question the available information does not resolve.

VNR003 sits within what the catalog numbering suggests is an early period in Violet Nights Recordings' output, though what preceded or followed it in the label's sequence is not addressed by the information at hand. Drum and bass as a genre has maintained a devoted vinyl collector community, and releases from specialist imprints in this space have tended to find engaged audiences, though no specific reception or sales information is available for this record.

What can be stated plainly is that this release documents a moment of collaboration or co-presentation between these artists and this label in 2021, pressed to vinyl in a genre with an enduring physical format culture.
