D-Styles
Phantazmagorea Tour Vinyl: Variants & Deviations

Listening notes

Released in 2020 on Aldebaran Records (catalog number ALDBN046EP), D-Styles' Phantazmagorea Tour Vinyl: Variants & Deviations is a twelve-track vinyl EP spanning the Electronic, Hip Hop, and Turntablism genres.

The record's organizational logic is apparent in its tracklist, which separates source material into discrete component parts. The A-side opens with three consecutive versions of "Return To Planetary Deterioration," each running close to one minute and isolating a different element: a synth take at 0:58, an EFX take at 1:02, and a drums take at 1:01. This approach continues across the side, with "Felonius Funk Vocals & EFX" at 1:10, followed by two treatments of "Diabolikal" — a drums and bass version at 0:44 and a vocals and EFX version at 0:39.

The B-side follows a similar structure. "Bug EFX" runs 0:59, followed by "Oh No" at 0:57 — the only track on the record whose title does not indicate a specific component designation. "John Wayne On Acid" then appears in two forms, a vocals and EFX version at 1:01 and a drums version at 0:30. The side closes with two tracks sharing the title "Bonus Drums & Synth," running 0:57 and 1:13 respectively.

Across both sides, individual track durations remain short, with none exceeding 1:13 and several falling under one minute. The component-based titling convention used throughout — isolating drums, synths, vocals, and effects as separate entries — suggests the release is oriented toward turntablist use, providing individual stems or variants as discrete playable cuts. The subtitle Variants & Deviations reinforces this framing.
