Dark Side Of The Moog, The / From Within
Vinyl Compilation

Listening notes

Released in 1995 on the German label Fax +49-69/450464, this vinyl compilation carrying catalog number PKPWPS 4 brings together material from two projects: The Dark Side Of The Moog and From Within. The release sits across the ambient, downtempo, and electronic genres, and presents four tracks spread across two sides.

Side A opens with "The Dark Side Of The Moog 2: A Saucerful Of Ambience (Excerpt)" at seven minutes and thirty-two seconds, followed by "The Dark Side Of The Moog: Wish You Were There (Excerpt)" at seven minutes and twenty-seven seconds. The parenthetical designation of both as excerpts indicates that neither represents a complete standalone work but rather a portion drawn from a larger piece.

Side B shifts to From Within material, beginning with "From Within 2: Future Surfacing (What Lies Ahead) (Excerpt)" at eight minutes and twenty-four seconds, the longest track on the release. Closing the record is "From Within 2: Do Bassdrums Have Feelings" at five minutes and fifty-eight seconds, notably the only track on the compilation not identified as an excerpt.

The titling throughout reflects a working relationship between the two projects and the broader Fax catalog, with the Dark Side Of The Moog tracks referencing works that share names with Pink Floyd albums, a pattern recognizable to followers of the label. The compilation format and the use of excerpts suggest the release functioned as an introduction to or sampler of longer-form works available elsewhere in the discography.
