DJ Notoya
Tokyo 1980s Victor Edition (The Vinyl Collection) Boogie, Funk & Modern Soul From Japan

Listening notes

DJ Notoya's *Tokyo 1980s Victor Edition (The Vinyl Collection) Boogie, Funk & Modern Soul From Japan*, issued on Victor under catalog number NJS-836, arrived in 2025 as a vinyl compilation drawing from the label's Japanese catalog. The release is catalogued across several genres, including boogie, city pop, funk, funk/soul, pop, and soul, a grouping that reflects the broad and often overlapping stylistic currents running through Japanese popular music during the decade the title references.

The record is sequenced across two sides, each carrying four tracks. Side A opens with "Bewitched (Are You Leaving Soon)" before moving into "サンセット・ロード" (Sunset Road), "Private Fileは開けたままで…," and "ファッシネイション." Side B follows with "恋するつもりになれば…," "ミステリー・ガール," "Lazy Dance," and closes on "東京ジャズ・クラブ." The tracklist mixes titles given in English with titles in Japanese, and the inclusion of both points toward source material that was itself navigating Western genre influences alongside domestic pop forms during the period in question.

The compilation format credits DJ Notoya as the curatorial figure behind the selection, and the Victor imprint — a major label with a long presence in the Japanese market — serves as the releasing body. Track durations are not listed in available documentation.

As a 2025 vinyl release organized around 1980s Japanese source material, the record participates in a broader and well-documented renewed interest in that era's domestic output. No further verified details regarding personnel, original recording dates, or pressing specifications are available at this time and should be confirmed before publication.
