DJ Red Alert & Mike Slammer
Slammin' Vinyl

Listening notes

Released in 1994 on Gumh Recordings, *Slammin' Vinyl* is a CD by DJ Red Alert and Mike Slammer catalogued as GUMH 011. The release sits across the genres of breakbeat, electronic, and hardcore, three categories that were in active and often overlapping circulation within the UK dance music ecosystem of the early 1990s.

The disc collects eleven tracks with a total running time that places it comfortably within full-length CD territory. The tracklist opens with "Don Gorgon Sound" at five minutes and forty-seven seconds and closes with "Let's Do It" at five minutes and fifty-four seconds. Several titles gesture toward the harder end of the breakbeat and hardcore spectrum — "Ruff!!!" and its companion piece "Ruffer!!!" appear at positions three and nine respectively, the latter running slightly longer at six minutes and six seconds against the former's four minutes and fifty-two seconds. The most directly genre-declarative title on the record is "Fuckin' Hardcore" at track seven, running five minutes and fifty seconds.

The set also includes what appears to be a rework within the same release: "In Effect" at position six runs five minutes and nineteen seconds, while "In Effect (The Remix)" appears at position ten at six minutes and eighteen seconds, suggesting the CD was conceived to offer variant versions rather than a strictly linear track sequence.

Other titles — "Just Wanna Hold U Tight," "Ganja Man," "Don't Need Your Love," and "Let's Go" — point toward the range of reference points, from ragga-influenced phrasing to more melodic or emotional registers, that characterized much breakbeat and hardcore output of the period.
