Fela Kuti
Vinyl Box Set 1

Listening notes

Wrasse Records released Fela Kuti's Vinyl Box Set 1 in 2010 under catalog number WRASS283. The package collects material across six vinyl records, presenting eighteen tracks — including both parts and alternate versions — drawn from several of Kuti's recordings.

The set spans titles that will be familiar to anyone who has spent time with Kuti's catalog. "Expensive Shit," "Sorrow Tears & Blood," "Colonial Mentality," and "Beasts Of No Nations" are among the recordings represented, alongside "Water No Get Enemy," "Everything Scatter," "Teacher Don't Teach Me Nonsense," "Fear Not For Man," and "Palm Wine Sound." Where applicable, the sequencing distinguishes between individual parts and versions: "Beasts Of No Nations," for instance, appears here in both an instrumental version on side K and a vocal version on side L, while "Everything Scatter" is presented as "Everything Scatter (Rere Run)" on side E, paired with "Who No Know Go Know" on side F.

Wrasse Records assigned the set to a range of genres in its documentation, listing Afrobeat, Funk, Funk / Soul, Jazz, and Folk, World, & Country — a grouping that reflects the breadth of classification systems applied to Kuti's work rather than any single editorial judgment.

For collectors and researchers, the box set represents a consolidated vinyl reissue of multiple titles under one release, issued by a UK-based label. The catalog number WRASS283 and the 2010 release date are the confirmed identifiers for this edition. Readers seeking detail on original release dates, recording contexts, or personnel for the individual titles included here should consult the source records for each album separately.
